Thailand is stated as one of Malaysia’s top 10
trading partner. The Malaysia-Thailand border at Bukit Kayu Hitam was proposed
to be opened for 24 hours. This issue has gotten a really good response as it
will give a positive impact on the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). As of right
now, Bukit Kayu Hitam border is being open for 18 hours, starting from 6 am
until 12 am.
Bukit Kayu Hitam was given its name way back when
a soldier was stranded and started to cook rice and the rice suddenly changes
to black because the wood the soldier used was from a tree named ‘Komoi’. At
first, the border functions as a security for the country. However, during the
era of communist colonialism, Bukit Kayu Hitam had been shut down and evacuated.
After the communist and colonialist left, Bukit Kayu Hitam was re-opened for rubber
plantation.
In addition, the importance of a border is
security, political believes and trade. The government agencies that are responsible
in managing border issues are Royal Malaysia Custom, Immigration and Quarantine.
Customs will examine the export and import merchandise, tourists’ luggage and
control all entry and exit of goods. Meanwhile, the immigration is supposed to
control the movement of people and passport, permit and visa’s issues. Last but
not least, the quarantine will manage the permit, licenses and certification
involved in export and import of plants, animals, agriculture production and
much more.
First and foremost, the pro for opening the
border for 24 hours is that it could attract more tourists. When there are more
tourists, GDP also increases. Secondly is economic development. The employment
rate will rise hence reducing the rate of poverty. Lastly, business
opportunities will be broader as there is plenty more time to do business.
Hawkers and taxi drivers are one of the most beneficial recipients as they have
more time to get customers.
The cons on the other hand are safety and social
issues are going to hike up especially when smuggling drugs, rice and oil will
be easier at night. Moreover, opening the border for 24 hours will affect the
economy mainly the local businesses when Thailand’s products are sold at a
cheaper price than the local’s product. This could happen because there is no
limit of time to do trade.
Although the government have not decided whether
or not to impose the law, they should make an agreement with Thailand for a
probation time to see how things are working out for both countries.
Nevertheless, more detailed agreement regarding this issue should be further
discussed.
Interesting! haha

ReplyDeleteNice & interesting article about bukit kayu hitam
ReplyDeleteInteresting topic...
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I agree with all the points stated above. But full research need to be taken to ensure that the advantages will outweigh the disadvantages for the benefits of both country.
ReplyDeleteI'm agree if Bukit Kayu Hitam being operated 24hours. But, country should tighten the security at the border and more immigration worker should be put there at night. Nice work all of you for discussing this matter.
ReplyDeleteNice topic to be discussed.. I do agree that bukit kayu hitam need to be opened for 24/7. The local people maybe can get a lot of benefit due to that.. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteInteresting article to discuss.
ReplyDeleteGood topic to be focus on. Issue on social economic.thumbs up
ReplyDeleteI found the author several times mentioned that the opening of the Bukit Kayu Hitam border for 24 hours would increase the rate of GDP which in turn can boost the economic growth. For me, an increase in GDP and economic growth is not necessarily good. If there is such thing as inequality in income distribution etc, it is clearly will gives benefit to certain parties only.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the author, the level of security at the border need to be improved if the access is carried out 24h.
Well done and great job :)
Such an interesting topic..
ReplyDeleteIts a good topic to known. There's a lot of benefit we could get when its open for 24 hours. Its could help boots our economy more in the future.
ReplyDeleteWhen opening the boarder of bukit kayu hitam for 24 hours, our GDP would increase, but the level of security needs to be more tightener and have to be more strict. furthermore an easier excess to people when ever they want to enter to thailand because there is no limit time.
ReplyDeleteIm strongly agree. This is a good article and interesting. 👍

ReplyDeleteI agree with the opening of the border at Bukit Kayu Hitam for 24 hours. But of course, there are pros and cons of it. Trade barriers such as tariffs and quota should be imposed to make the import goods less competitive.
ReplyDeleteNice topic to be discuss
ReplyDeleteIt is a good idea and give many benefits to our country but of course alots of thing government need to consider.
ReplyDeleteNice topic to discussed about. I think that the idea of opening the border of Bukit Kayu Hitam for 24 hours quite good. Undirectly, it can improve to boost our economic as well as there will be more export and import occurs between our country and Thailand. But, it must be noted that our country must look more at the safety side of our country as our country located just between the border with Thailand.

ReplyDeleteBetter to analyze the pros and cons and do an agreement. A black and white is important so both countries will take care of both safety, security and socio-economy.
ReplyDeleteGood
ReplyDeletei agree . there will be pros and cons in implementing this.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting topic to discuss .. im agree that bukit kayu hitam need to be opened for 24 hours...
ReplyDeleteNice input to share
ReplyDeleteAuthor mentioned twice on good return of GDP, but Government has to take a step back and analyze whether that is what we really need, or safety is our main focus. More research on any of neighbouring country sucessfully practising this as reference.
ReplyDeleteThere are many other ways that could attract tourism. Opening the border 24 hours would definitely effect the safety of Malaysia.
ReplyDeleteits good topic to be discuss
ReplyDeleteGood 👍 Thank you this knowledge. Nice topic to discuss

ReplyDeleteEvery issue has their own pros and cons..The more important thing is the safety of the local population. I agree with the author which a clear agreement with Thailand should be carried out.
ReplyDeleteAgree. It should improve the country's economy and Perlis specifically.
ReplyDeleteAll government agencies dealing with the country security should be prepared for the change.
I do not agree because it can increase social problems in this town.
